This Relaxed Colorado Home is the Perfect Mountain Sanctuary

Nestled in the magnificent mountains near Vail, Colorado, this newly renovated mountain home has rustic luxury galore that will make you wish you lived there too.

The whole interior of the home received a major facelift and the footprint was expanded to accommodate two new lower-level guest suites along with a new kitchen and hearth room. And who wouldn’t want to live in Vail, with its huge Vail Ski Resort and setting in the White River National Forest. The area is a big draw for winter sports of all kinds and summer activities like golfing, hiking and fly fishing.

Renovated by the team at Meadow Mountain Homes, the house has a new open quality and plenty of space for family and friends too. The builders are known for creating “Mountain Homes for Mountain People” and this redo is a perfect example of the casual rustic vibe that is so common in the area.

The stone and wood exterior is characteristic of mountain homes for obvious reasons, and the bright teal framing on the main peaked wall of windows is a very stylish, understated contemporary accent.

The best part of the outdoor area is this new patio, complete with an amazing firepit and plenty of room for gathering around to stay cozy. The patio also has a staircase that leads down to a skier access trail so that residents can easily get to the trails and slopes. Being just steps from the main living space also makes it convenient. Natural plantings mean low maintenance and synergy with the surrounding forests.

With an open, airy feeling and a high ceiling, the living room is large enough to accommodate severe different seating areas without feeling crowded. Unique artwork is all that’s needed to accent the neutral palette of this homey space. The builders actually completed the home six weeks ahead of schedule because the owners wanted to spend the holidays here — how can you blame them? We would too!

The family room is a cozier, more intimate space focused on the stone fireplace. The furnishings are more casual and have an even more relaxed feeling than those used in the living room. Here too, the neutral palette is punctuated by fun, colorful art and pops of prints such as the zebra-topped coffee table.

The new kitchen is expansive and relaxed, with more than enough room for a house full of family or friends. A huge island takes center stage while the rest of the space is lined with natural wood cabinetry for a rustic, yet contemporary look that includes closed storage as well as open shelving.

Vintage style latch hardware on cabinets that form the base of the island is particularly nice.  The eye is also drawn to the pop of black provided by the stunning range hood, accented in copper. Pendants lights hanging over the island are from Vail Lights and add a bit of industrial edge while tying in with the range hood.

A spacious dining room that seat as many as 18 people was formerly the old kitchen and dining area. The fuss-free design includes three rustic chandeliers, built-in hutches with a wet bar flanking a gray stone fireplace and a gorgeous ceiling clad in warm-colored wood.

The bedrooms include one with four built-in bunks that can accommodate children or adults as guests. A central ladder to the top level is sturdy and goes above the middle section that can hold all the bedtime necessities as a nightstand would.

The bathroom is also easy-care, with a double trough sink, plenty of open storage and subway tiles around the wall. It’s a clean and utilitarian look that’s also durable.

The garage was also expanded, featuring three bays and a matching structure for the mechanical works. Everything about the garage mirrors the facade of the main house, down to the high-end finishes and unmatched attention to detail.
